Preventive Dentistry

The least expensive dentistry is the kind you never need

Prevention at Happy Smiles Dental is an active clinical program built on measurement, not a box to tick twice a year.

Risk assessment sets your schedule

At each visit we chart pocket depths, bleeding points, plaque distribution, enamel demineralization, existing restorations, and wear patterns. Combined with your medical history, medications, diet, and saliva flow, those numbers produce a risk profile.

That profile — not a default calendar — determines whether you should be seen every three, four, or six months. Some patients safely extend their interval; others avoid years of restorative work by shortening it.

What a hygiene appointment includes

Removal of hardened calculus above and below the gumline, polishing, an assessment of home technique with specific coaching, and fluoride application when indicated. If gum inflammation is present, we treat it rather than simply noting it.

Every comprehensive exam also includes an oral cancer screening of the tongue, floor of mouth, palate, cheeks, and neck. Early detection changes outcomes dramatically, and the screening takes under two minutes.

Gum therapy when cleaning is not enough

When pockets deepen past three millimeters and bleed, a standard cleaning cannot reach the bacteria driving bone loss. Scaling and root planing cleans root surfaces under local anesthesia, usually across two visits.

Afterward, periodontal maintenance every three to four months keeps bacterial levels below the threshold that restarts the disease. This is the single most effective way to keep natural teeth for life.

How prevention works here

  1. 01

    Measure

Full charting, imaging, and photographs create a baseline we can compare against over time.

  2. 02

    Personalize

Your interval, home-care plan, and fluoride strategy are matched to your actual risk factors.

  3. 03

    Intervene early

Small findings are treated or monitored deliberately, long before they become expensive.

Frequently asked questions

Is a cleaning every six months enough?+

For many healthy adults, yes. For anyone with a history of gum disease, rapid tartar formation, dry mouth, or diabetes, three to four months is usually necessary to keep the condition stable.

Why do my gums bleed when I floss?+

Bleeding indicates inflammation, not injury. It usually means plaque is sitting at the gumline. With consistent cleaning it typically resolves within one to two weeks; if it does not, you should be evaluated.

Do adults benefit from sealants?+

Sometimes. Adults with deep, stain-prone grooves and no decay in those teeth can benefit, though sealants are most valuable on newly erupted permanent molars in children.

Does insurance cover preventive visits?+

Most dental plans cover two cleanings and exams per year at or near one hundred percent. We verify your specific benefits before your appointment.
